What a Mother Means to a Daughter
On Sunday, May 28th, 2023, the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Canada hosted its 7th annual Mother-Daughter Tea Party in Toronto, with 33 people attending in person and nine joining online via Zoom. The event centered on the theme "The Power of the Mother-Daughter Relationship: Modeling & Influencing."
WFWP Canada President Lilly Tadin opened the gathering by celebrating the complex and meaningful relationships between mothers and daughters. She remarked, “As mothers, we always give, give without ceasing.”
The first speaker, Mrs. Rosary Escano from the Philippine Women’s Network, shared how her mother’s character shaped her artistic nature. Rosary recalled how her mother introduced her and her siblings to classic films like The Sound of Music and The King and I, taught them good manners, and inspired their love for cooking. Reflecting on how she and her siblings have come to resemble their mother in ways they never expected, Rosary emphasized the importance of self-awareness, faith, and prayer in nurturing a strong mother-daughter bond. "My mom lived vicariously through me," she noted.
Banu Siva, Project Coordinator for the Senior Tamil Society of Peel, spoke about the deep bond she shares with her mother, who left behind a secure life in India to build a better future for her children in Canada. Banu shared how her relationship with her mother, though challenging at times, has grown stronger as she now cares for her elderly mother. “My mom is a true example of hard work,” Banu stated, expressing her gratitude for the lessons her mother has imparted.
Evelyn Stewart, Coordinator for WFWP Canada, offered a poignant reflection on her own experience with her mother. Despite growing up in a safe environment, Evelyn felt something was missing due to her parents' strained marriage. After her father’s passing, she invited her mother to live with her family, which allowed her mother to heal and experience the joy of caring for her grandchildren. Evelyn advised the audience to appreciate their mothers, saying, “Your mom, whoever she is, whatever way she treated you…that’s the very best she could do.”
The event also featured a video tribute from Nana Whyte, an International Business Marketing student at Sun Moon University. Nana shared how her mother’s daily calls of encouragement and support were instrumental in her journey, underscoring the irreplaceable role of mothers. “Mothers are everything for us,” she concluded.
The event wrapped up with a lively question-and-answer session and a group photo, leaving attendees with a renewed appreciation for the powerful influence of the mother-daughter relationship.
WFWP Canada explores Educating with Values in Bilingual Webinar
On April 25, 2023, the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Canada hosted a cross-country, bilingual webinar titled “Educating with Values - The Role of the Family in Education” from 7:30 to 9:00 PM EST, attracting 35 participants. The event featured three distinguished speakers with expertise in teaching and counseling children and families.
WFWP Canada President Lilly Tadin opened the webinar by emphasizing the need to improve family and values education. “If parents and schools are working together, they can be very powerful…they can elevate the moral life of our society with those values,” she stated.
Caroline Olusoji Keshinro, a Masters in Counselling Psychology and Evangelist in Christ’s Apostolic Church Worldwide, shared her personal experience of the impact of family on education. Recalling her transfer from a private school to a public school in Nigeria, she highlighted the lack of qualified teachers and how her father's home teachings gave her a significant advantage. “Families are the game changers,” Caroline noted, stressing that parental involvement is crucial for a child's academic success. She outlined a three-pronged approach to address parental neglect: educating parents on its effects, advocating for stronger family support systems, and emphasizing the need for prayers.
Christine Ranisavljev, a retired Secondary Science Teacher from the Toronto District School Board, spoke about the lasting impact of a caring teacher who helped her gain admission to an arts school. This act of kindness inspired her to understand the importance of investing in others. Christine emphasized the value of building strong relationships between parents and teachers and using failures as learning opportunities. “Imagine the world that a valuable family creates, then make that vision your reality,” she encouraged.
Paule Blaine-Clotteau, Executive Director of Maison des Parents du Québec, discussed her work supporting families struggling with basic needs. Her organization offers activities like music, art therapy, and psychodrama to help these families find stability. Paule noted that immigrant parents, in particular, face cultural challenges but are determined to provide better lives for their children. She cautioned against relying on smartphones as babysitters, stating, “Parents must be vigilant with their children.”
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session and announcements for future events, including a Mother-Daughter Relationship seminar, park cleanups, and a Peace Road event in Toronto.
